Fuel and charging costs: how to compare
Gas, hybrid and electric running costs, worked out with your own numbers.
Fuel costs depend on three numbers: how far you drive, how efficient the car is, and what you pay for fuel or electricity. Use your own numbers, not national averages.
Gas and hybrid
Yearly fuel cost = miles per year ÷ combined MPG × price per gallon. The EPA's fueleconomy.gov lists official ratings for most cars.
Electric
Yearly charging cost = miles per year ÷ miles per kWh × price per kWh. Home charging is usually cheaper than public fast charging; use the rate on your electricity bill and a realistic share of public charging.
Things that change the math
- Cold weather and highway speeds reduce efficiency, especially for EVs
- Premium fuel requirements
- Whether you can charge at home
- Local fuel and electricity prices
