Hi there,
This issue's cost: dealer add-ons
A reader agreed a price on a used SUV, then found three extra lines on the buyer's order: "protection package", "VIN etching" and "nitrogen tires", adding up to $899. None were things she'd asked for.
- Always ask for the out-the-door price in writing before you visit.
- Read the buyer's order line by line before you sign anything.
- Ask for any add-on you didn't request to be removed. If the dealer says it's "already installed", you can still decline to pay for it, or walk away.
Full guide: Negotiate the out-the-door price.
This issue's money-saving tip
Before you shop, get a loan pre-approval from your bank or a credit union. Then the dealer's finance office has to beat a real number, not just quote you a monthly payment.
Reader question
"Is a 72-month loan a bad idea?" Not always, but it usually means more total interest, and owing more than the car is worth for longer. Compare the total of payments, not just the monthly amount.
