Buying used: history reports and inspections
Two checks that prevent most bad used-car buys.
A vehicle history report and an independent pre-purchase inspection catch most problems before you pay.
Vehicle history report
- Check title status (salvage, flood, rebuilt)
- Accidents and damage reports
- Number of owners and odometer readings
- The NMVTIS system run for the Department of Justice tracks title brands; approved providers offer reports
Pre-purchase inspection
- Have an independent mechanic you choose inspect the car before you buy
- Expect to pay for it; it's worth it
- Be wary if a seller won't allow an inspection
Also check
- Open recalls by VIN at NHTSA.gov
- The FTC Buyers Guide sticker on dealer cars, which says if it's sold "as is" or with a warranty
